Reflection in the Exponential Era: Ethical Decision-Making Amid Instant Communication

Digital Divides

In the exponentially connected world of today, our ability to communicate synchronously has led to an unexpected consequence: the rise of digital tribalism. This phenomenon, driven by instant communication and the erosion of reflective thinking, is shaping and fracturing societies at unprecedented speeds.

The Speed of Modern Communication

Moore’s law has done more than just make chips smaller and faster; it has interconnected our world in ways that have fundamentally altered the nature of communication. While our technology evolves at an exponential pace, human nature remains relatively static. Our DNA, our biological clocks, and our psychological frameworks have not adapted to match the speed of technological change. This discrepancy creates a significant tension between our capabilities and our instincts.

Historically, communication allowed for reflection. Ancient societies and even modern tribal communities could ponder decisions, allowing time to consider the consequences and nuances of actions. However, the evolution from telegraph to telephone, radio, satellite, fiber optics, Wi-Fi, and soon LiFi, has compressed this time for reflection to nearly zero. Our communication has become instantaneous and synchronous, but our mental and ethical frameworks remain anchored in pre-technological times.

The Consequences of Instant Communication

The rapid pace of communication has not only increased the volume of data but also accelerated its velocity. This phenomenon is akin to a power law where the amount of change per unit time is accelerating. The sheer volume of data being created and consumed is overstimulating us individually while simultaneously limiting our choices. In the exponential era, synchronous communication defines our interactions, reshaping how we make decisions and respond to information.

Reflect on the implications of a ubiquitous surveillance state controlled by a few. Those with greater access to this instant flow of “digital water” will quickly gain peerless advantages, possibly unchecked power at scale. This creates a stark divide between the information-rich and the information-poor, exacerbating existing inequalities and fostering tribalism.

The Erosion of Reflective Decision-Making

In the past, human interactions and decisions were bounded by the technology of the time, allowing for reflection and consideration. The diversity of actions was limited, and the predicted range of outcomes was manageable. However, in the modern era, these limitations no longer apply. Converging technologies create new ecosystems that amplify the consequences of our actions on a much larger scale and over longer time horizons.

Today’s leaders in business, government, and academia must make decisions about adopting and deploying technologies whose impacts are often unforeseeable due to the complexity and high adoption rates of these technologies. The consequences of these decisions are no longer obvious or observable, leading to ethical dilemmas and unintended outcomes.

The Role of Shared Values in Mitigating Tribalism

To address the challenges posed by the rapid elimination of reflection time, it is crucial to find common ground across humanity. The realities of living in a world that is over its capacity to support life are beginning to resonate with more people. The decline in climate change denial is one example of this shift in perspective. As living conditions worsen globally, the interconnectedness of our challenges becomes more apparent.

Drawing inspiration from nature, where high-density populations exhibit malleable behaviors, we can envision a set of shared values that guide human interactions in the digital age. Birds, for instance, navigate the sky in flocks using simple rules without crashing into each other. Similarly, humans can adopt a framework of shared values to navigate the complexities of the modern world ethically.

The unprecedented speed and volume of modern communication challenge our ability to reflect and make ethical decisions. This has fueled digital tribalism, fracturing societies and exacerbating inequalities. To mitigate these effects, we must foster a framework of shared values that allows us to navigate the complexities of the Exponential Era responsibly. By doing so, we can create a stable, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
